White oak (Quercus alba) – Long lived large tree. Beautiful bark and good fall color. Great shade tree. Will last many years.
Black gum (Nyssa sylvatica) – Medium sized tree that has fantastic fall color.
Dogwood (Cornus florida) – White blooming in the spring, small to medium sized tree with great leaf fall color and pretty bright red berries. Locate where tree gets some afternoon shade.
Redbud (Cercis canadensis) – Lavender/pink blooming in the spring, small to medium sized tree with great yellow leaf fall color. Plant where tree gets some afternoon shade.
Grancy Greybeard (Chionanthus virginicus) – Fluffy white blooms in early spring. Leaves are lime yellow.
Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) – Can get large. Big shiny leaves and great for screening. Beautiful large white fragrant flowers in early summer. Does great in full sun.
Easter Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) – Olive green conifer that is well suited for sun and some shade. Great screening plant and tough.
Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera) – Large shrub to small tree. Tough native with elongated leaves and fast grower when established.
Beauty Berry (Callicarpa Americana) – Deciduous shrub with amazing pink/purple berries in summer.
Fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenia) – Deciduous shrub with cotton ball like blooms in the spring and one of the best fall color of all shrubs.
Inkberry (Ilex glabra) – Evergreen native shrub that will do well in massings. Part of the holly family
Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitora) – Great native evergreen shrub. Does well in sun or shade. Different varieties for different growth habits. Small roundshape, upright irregular and taller weeping form too. Awesome red berries as well. Birds love them.
Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) – Great plant all around. Large white panicle flowers in early summer, course textured leaves, great fall color and exfoliating bark. Needs a little shade. Can reach 8-10ft tall.
Grasses and Perennials
Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) – Mounding form reaching 3 ft in height. Awesome show of cotton candy looking pink blooms in the fall.
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) – Clumping form and vertical. Pale green leaf blades the turn tan in fall. Seed head are pronounced like a bloom and last well into winter for seasonal attraction.
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida) – Herbaceous perennial with very showy round yellow flowers with black seed heads in the center of the flower. Great plant for pollinators.
Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) – Upright herbaceous perennial with showy yellow flowers late summer into early fall. Another great plant for wildlife.
